Based on Psalm 133 and Isaiah 2:1-4, Ruth Duck's text reminds of the pleasure that comes “when people live as one. When peace and justice light the way the will of God is done”.
The SAB setting features harmonic richness and some gentle diatonic dissonances, as well as some imitation between voices. Here is a piece for practicing wide intervals: the sixth, seventh, and octave are all part of the refrain melody, and appear in the harmony as well. The sprightly accompaniment playfully weaves together two stanzas of mountain heights and tumbling walls before settling into static harmonies underlaying the quiet joy blooming “when people work for peace.”
Liturgically appropriate in Easter (Year B, Second Sunday), Pentecost, (Year A Proper 15, Year B Proper 7), and Advent (Year A Advent I).
